4. Mobility models
There are four mobility models available within the Erasmus
Mundus Master Programme in Adapted Physical Activity:
Mobility model
A: Catholic University Leuven (K.U.Leuven), Belgium –
Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education (Norwegian
School of Sport Sciences), Norway
In mobility model A, the K.U.Leuven delivers 30 ECTS, and
the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences delivers 30 ECTS, as
follows:
Phase 1: self-preparation
phase, in which students update their preliminary knowledge
in research methodology and pathology in APA, and information
about the current status of APA (research, education, and
formation) in their home countries. To facilitate this phase
for the Erasmus Mundus third-country students, the Master
Consortium offers the following means of distance learning:
(i) ADAPT CD-ROM – a European curriculum in Adapted
Physical Activity, and (ii) course materials and self-assessment
tests available on the website of the program.
Phase 2: hosted
by the K.U.Leuven (Belgium). A multidisciplinary package of
theoretical courses given by different European APA experts
from the K.U.Leuven and the Consortium Universities.

(lectures, seminars, visits, and practical training), within
a modular system. Students can choose among: sensorymotor
disorders, physiological disorders, or psychosocial disorders.

Activity: autism, mental retardation, psychomotor
therapy in children (part 1), psychomotor therapy in children
(part 2), adult psychiatric patients, special physical education
and APA
C) Adapted Physical Activity intervention – Physiological
disorders
- Program design and evaluation
- Evaluation and intervention methods in Adapted Physical
Activity: obesity, respiratory disorders, neurological
rehabilitation, cardiac disorders in children, cancer, cardiac
disorders in adults
Phase 4: hosted
by the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Introduction to
existing initiatives of APA intervention and APA research
in a specialised centre at a partner university with a specific
population.
Introductory course: Participation in clinical practice and
research-based seminars related to the clinical practice (10 ECTS)
The Norwegian School of Sport Sciences offers an APA intervention
program, organised in cooperation with the Beitostølen
Health Sports Center (BHC), a national institution with a
world-wide reputation in adapted physical activity and rehabilitation.
The NSSS and the BHC work closely together regarding student
practice in theoretical seminars on all academic levels, from
BA to PhD, and on research projects.
Phase 5: hosted
by Norwegian School of Sport Sciences.
Master's thesis: Final assessment of the master's project
proposal and related specialisation in clinical practice,
data collection/empirical study, and writing of master's dissertation
(20 ECTS)

- The handicapped body and learning of practical skills
in Adapted Physical Activity
- Phenomenological approaches to APA with emphasis on case
studies
- Effect measurements (physiological, biomechanical, social,
and psychological) of APA in rehabilitation
- Organisation of APA at national and local level in integrated
settings
- Optimal performance by individualisation of skill learning
in a range of sports activities (adapted winter activities
and outdoor life in general are specialities for Norway)

Mobility
model B: Catholic University Leuven (K.U.Leuven), Belgium
– Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education

In model B, the K.U.Leuven delivers 42 ECTS (24 + 18), and
the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences delivers 18 ECTS, as
follows:

10 ECTS: In-depth orientation in APA, fully adapted in English and including: introductory course - participation in clinical practice (4 ECTS) and specialisation within clinical practice and research based seminars related to clinical practice and program design and evaluation (6 ECTS)
The NSSS offers these two phases organized in a close relation with two national institutions with a world-wide reputation in the area of adapted physical activity and rehabilitation. Beitostolen Healthsports Centre (BHC) and Stavern Hospital for Rehabilitation (SHR).

Master's thesis (data collection, data analysis, and writing
the master's dissertation) (18 ECTS)
The Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy at the
K.U.Leuven has a research unit in Adapted Physical Activity,
recognised world-wide as a centre of excellence. Numerous

The UP offers practical experience and quality supervision
in the following settings:
- Special Olympics sports centres (Olomouc “Topolany”,
Olomouc “Klic”, Sternberk - Vincentium)
- Adapted physical education in integrated school settings
(the Olomouc special integrative pre-school institution,
and three public schools offering integrated settings: “Helsinska,”
“Lutin,” and “Zabreh”)
- Intensive two-week courses in adapted winter sports, leisure
time sports for children with multiple disabilities in the
university sport club
Phase 5: hosted
by UP.
Master's thesis: final assessment of the master's project
proposal, data collection/empirical study, data analysis,
and writing of master's dissertation (20 ECTS)

- Mental disability and the Special Olympic process: improving
public awareness and attitudes toward persons with mental
disabilities
- Adapted physical education in integrated school settings:
adaptation of programmes, adaptation of the environment,
and attitudes toward participation
- Specific sport-oriented research performance parameters
and training methodology in: boccia, wheelchair basketball,
sledge hockey, sitting volleyball, and adapted winter sports.

The UL offers practical experience and quality supervision
in the following settings:
- Brothers of Charity Services, BAWNMORE - The programs
caters for people of all abilities. Activities include sailing,
horse riding, bowling, hill-walking, indoor hockey and soccer.
- The Daughters of Charity, St.Vincents, Lisnagry, Limerick
- a centre which caters for the holistic needs of both children
and adults with intellectual disabilities. The clientele
have access to a fully equipped pool, physical education
and physiotherapy. The centre provides an extensive Special
Olympics program, which currently has over 120 athletes
participating in 9 different sports.
- Catherine Mc Auley Special School; Enable Ireland Children's
Services Limerick; School for the Deaf/Hearing Impaired,
Limerick
- COPE Foundation, Cork, Ireland: service provider for
around 1,600 people with Learning Disabilities, from newly
born infants to geriatrics. It has booth residential and
day care. Practical training is offered in the Department
of Leisure, Recreation and Physical Activity.
